    DOES an assertion of Christianity imply someone is chaste?

    The question was raised yesterday as a man accused of sexual assault took his case to the Supreme Court. At issue is legislation relating to the admissibility of evidence about a complainant's sexual experience - or lack of it.

    Peter Charles Spratt, 22, is facing committal proceedings in the local court, charged over the alleged date rape of an 18-year-old woman. The offences allegedly occurred in March last year while they were out drinking and, after they shared a taxi, in a street in Mosman.

    The Supreme Court heard that the woman's statement to police referred to her being a devout Christian and wearing a chastity ring on her finger. She recalled saying to the accused: ''I'm a Christian, how could you do this to me?'' He allegedly replied: ''Let's pray. Our Father, who art in heaven … ''
